Wellness
At Steyn City School we hold the view that the social and emotional well-being of our students is an integral part of teaching and learning. The wellness of our students is supported by form teachers in the Early Years Centre and Preparatory School and mentors in the College. The Wellness Centre offers a quiet space for students, when needed, along with the support of the school counsellor and a counselling psychologist. Regular talks given by leading experts in the field are hosted for students, parents, and staff. The belief in a proactive approach to fostering wellness is at the core of the Wellness Department.
Service
Service is a pillar of Steyn City School and forms a core part of our culture and our identity. We acknowledge our privilege and serve the needs of our community partners wherever we are able to do so. Our senior students work towards achieving service hours and the Prep Student Council and College student leadership portfolio drive our service ethos and work.
Steyn City School students and staff work through a variety of committees and Student Council initiatives in partnership with the wider community in which we live. Our service partners include three Early childhood Development Centres in Diepsloot, the Woodrock Animal Rescue, and Witkoppen Primary School. 2024 saw the launch of the Saturday Service Programme which works with twenty Grade 7 students from Witkoppen Primary School to develop their skills in English, Mathematics, and Technology.
In 2024, we launched the Steyn City School Foundation. The primary focus of the Foundation is fundraising for the Steyn City School Bursary Programme.
Steyn City School Foundation
23 May 2024 saw the launch of The Steyn City School Foundation. The primary focus of the Foundation is fundraising for the Steyn City School Bursary Programme which places two students into the school each year on full bursary.
The Steyn City School Bursary Programme is part of the Service Pillar of the school and has been approved by the Board, with a maximum of two bursaries being offered per year and usually (but not always) to Grade 8 students. The focus of this programme is on ensuring that we use our privilege to uplift and support students who would not otherwise be able to attend a school like ours. Our Bursary Programme ensures that every cost is covered for each bursary student, including fees, books, devices, school uniforms, nourishment, transport, wi-fi access, and any other incidental costs. The award of a bursary is not simply a way to put one child through school and give them access to tertiary education and a career; it is, rather, a poverty exit point for an entire family in the present and in the future. The economic empowerment from one child on a bursary has a ripple effect that spreads through the family, the community and into future generations.
